About Sea of Japan, facts and maps

Sea of Japan, Japanese Nihon-kai, Russian Yaponskoye More, also called East Sea, Korean Tonghae or Donghae, marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean. It is bounded by Japan and Sakhalin Island to the east and by Russia and Korea on the Asian mainland to the west. Its area is 377,600 square miles (978,000 square km).

A marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan is carrot-shaped when viewed from space. Its surface area amounts to 1,050,000 square kilometres with an average water depth of 1752 metres and a maximum depth of 4568 metres. Dohoku seamount, an underwater volcano, is its deepest point.

To the west is the Sea of Japan, separating Japan and Korea (which demands that the body of water be known internationally as the East Sea). South and west of Kyūshū is the East China Sea, a shallow, treacherous, semitropical body of water.

The Japanese government supports the exclusive use of the name “Sea of Japan” (日本海), while South Korea supports the alternative name “East Sea” (Korean: 동해; Hanja: 東海), and North Korea supports the name “Korean East Sea” (Korean: 조선동해; Hanja: 朝鮮東海).

The name – Sea of Japan (Japan Sea) became recognized internationally by the early 19th Century during which Japan had been in a state of national seclusion. Countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States use the name – Sea of Japan (Japan Sea) for making their nautical chart.

The Sea of Japan is decidedly cooler than the Pacific Ocean, but tends to be less developed. Air and water temperatures vary quite a bit from south to north, but swimming can be enjoyed in most places at least from mid July through August.
